Description SK85M (formerly JIS grade SK5) is a high-carbon tool steel containing approximately 0.85% carbon. It is one of the most commonly used cold-rolled carbon tool steels due to its excellent balance of workability, hardenability, mechanical performance, and cost effectiveness.

Compared with lower-carbon carbon steels, SK85M offers higher hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment while maintaining good formability and processability. Because of its large distribution volume, it is readily available in a wide range of dimensions and tempers.

Most SK-series steels are heat treated either before or after forming to achieve the required hardness, strength, and wear resistance. SK85M responds well to quenching and tempering, making it suitable for spring components, cutting tools, and precision mechanical parts.

TOKKIN maintains optimum surface roughness characteristics that support superior heat-treatment results and allow excellent final appearance after blackening processes.

Main Features:
  1. Excellent Balance of Performance and Cost
Provides an ideal combination of workability, hardenability, durability, and affordability.
  2. Good Hardenability
Can achieve high hardness and strength through quenching and tempering heat treatment.
  3. Widely Available Material
Large market distribution allows availability in various dimensions and delivery conditions.
  4. Suitable for Heat Treatment
Available in Annealed, Skin Passed, Hard Rolled, and Quenched & Tempered (Q&T) conditions.
  5. Good Wear Resistance
High carbon content provides excellent durability and resistance to wear after hardening.
  6. Optimized Surface Quality
Controlled surface finish supports superior appearance and performance after heat treatment and blackening.
SK85M is commonly used for springs, hinges, bandsaws, Thomson blades, horns, metal washers, spacers, and other industrial components that require a combination of strength, hardness, wear resistance, and economical production.
